Why I Built THREADex™


After more than 24 years in retail leadership and over 15 years building my own business, I've learned one simple truth:

Most employees want to do a great job.

They don't fail because they don't care.

They fail because no one has clearly shown them what success looks like, how to achieve it, or recognized them when they do.

As I grew Thread + Seed from a single boutique into a multi-location retail brand generating more than $12 million in sales, I experienced the same challenge most retail leaders face.

There is never enough time.

There isn't always a manager on the floor.

And as businesses grow, it becomes impossible for one leader to personally coach every employee, every shift, every day.

I knew that if our business was going to continue growing, we needed systems that could create consistency without constant supervision. Systems that helped employees understand their goals, take ownership of their performance, and feel empowered to succeed.

From the Sales Floor to Building Scalable Retail Systems

Melanie began her retail career at 18 years old working in a department store, where she quickly developed a deep understanding of customer behavior, sales psychology, and what truly creates a memorable client experience.

Over the course of nearly three decades in retail, she gained experience across multiple retail environments — from large-scale retail operations to growing boutique businesses — before launching her own retail company over 15 years ago.

Today, Melanie is the CEO of Thread + Seed, a multimillion-dollar boutique retail company with three distinct store formats, including a flagship concept location that continues to serve as a real-time testing ground for the systems developed through THREADex™.

As the business expanded into multiple locations, one challenge became impossible to ignore: What creates success in one store doesn’t automatically replicate itself across teams, leaders, and locations.

While operational systems created structure, the real challenge was building consistent customer experiences, stronger accountability, and sales behaviors that teams could confidently execute without relying on one strong leader to carry the culture.

That challenge sparked a deep focus on behavioral training, leadership development, accountability systems, sales psychology, and creating practical retail frameworks that teams could realistically implement within the fast pace of retail environments. Thread + Seed grew from a $765,000 business to a $1.3 million business, while average sale value increased by 38% through stronger customer engagement, more consistent sales behaviors, and improved team accountability.

That growth ultimately created the foundation to expand into a flagship retail location, where those same systems helped generate $1 million in revenue within the store’s very first year.
